To encourage senior volunteers or just-retired citizens to assist in environment education promotion, the Environmental Protection Bureau, Nantou County Government held a promotion and training workshop for senior volunteers at the Ci-En Community Activity Center, Puli Township on October 19th (Wednesday). The workshop stressed understanding local environment issues and the National Green Life Movement. Courses in the workshop were carried out in educational, exchanging, and interactive ways, and enhanced the volunteers’ accurate understanding on the ideas and context of environment education.

Many senior volunteers participated in this workshop, in which a total of 30 citizens participated. For the courses in the first part of the workshop, Contracted-based Assistant Professor Yang Chih-Chi from the Department of Civil Engineering, National Chi Nan University was invited to talk about the local environmental issues of Nantou County and the National Green Life Movement. With interactive Q&A methods, he wanted students to think about what kind of energy saving and carbon emission reducing actions have already been practiced in local communities and how can they do better. Additionally, by introducing the national policy Net Zero 2050, he introduced them to carbon emission volume and greenhouse gas. He also stressed that in the future, communities will become an important part of promoting carbon emission reduction. Through the “Course on Local Environment Issues”, he expects the community to practice civil green life and work together for environment sustainability.

For the second part of the workshop, Lecturer Liu Feng-Lan from the Puli Senior Education Center led the students in reusing recycled bottles. They decorated used PET bottles, glass bottles, and paint buckets and enjoyed percussion music with them. Through interesting teaching and practices, he lectured enabled students to exercise their body in rhythm and play harmonious beats under a joyful musical atmosphere. Littered bottles from our daily life can become instruments to play percussion music after giving them a beat and rhythm. Through the “Eco-friendly Beat and& Exercise”, it enabled students to ponder the context of environment protection and how to create an active life. She expected community residents to bring back what they learned to the community and their household for further promotion.

Commissioner Li Yi-Shu of the Environmental Protection Bureau stated that many seniors are aggressively playing a role and contributing their efforts to society through being volunteers. This can effectively promote the physical and mental health of these seniors and enhance the living quality of communities. This workshop enabled more passionate seniors to have interactions and learn from each other, utilized what they learned, and further popularized environment protection concepts to create a better home for all of us.
