Many people receive beautifully packaged gift boxes during holidays and special occasions. After finishing the cookies or pastries inside, have you ever wondered whether the plastic tray at the bottom belongs in the trash or recycling? Or when opening a new toothbrush or computer mouse, have you been unsure what to do with the hard, clear plastic shell? These plastic trays and blister packs, commonly referred to as flat plastic packaging, are valuable recyclable resources. Please do not throw them into the trash, they should be recycled.

　To help the public identify these materials more easily, the Environmental Protection Bureau, Nantou County Government, explained that flat plastic packaging is commonly found in everyday life. The first type is plastic trays, which are typically used inside gift boxes for cookies, egg rolls, and other food products to hold or separate the contents. The second type is blister packs, the rigid transparent plastic shells commonly used to display and protect products such as consumer electronics, batteries, and toothbrushes. Because these plastic items were often difficult to identify, they were frequently discarded as general waste, resulting in wasted resources and adding to the burden on incinerators.

　Regarding proper recycling, the Bureau reminds the public to follow two key steps: separate and clean. Many blister packs are attached to paperboard backing, so before recycling, be sure to completely separate the plastic shell from the paper card. Recycle the paperboard with paper recyclables, and place the clean plastic shell with plastic recyclables. Likewise, plastic trays used for food may contain grease or food residue, so please give them a quick rinse or wipe them clean before recycling to prevent contamination of the recycling process.

　Director-general Yi-shu Li of the Bureau also urged residents to hand over clean, single-material plastic trays and blister packs to recycling collection trucks. Through this small change in everyday habits, residents can help reduce waste and ensure that Nantou’s beautiful natural environment continues to thrive for generations to come.
