Environmental efforts at construction sites are no longer limited to controlling dust pollution within work areas. They are gradually expanding into broader areas such as environmental education and community engagement. The Environmental Protection Bureau, Nantou County Government guided construction companies in bringing environmental education programs to Fazhi Elementary School and Wanfeng Elementary School in Renai Township. Through diverse activities covering climate change, ecological conservation, and drone technology experiences, the program helped bring environmental education into schools and nurture awareness from an early age.
The courses covered topics including the conservation of endemic Taiwanese species, climate change and extreme weather, river ecosystems, and water resource protection. Through easy-to-understand explanations and interactive activities, students were guided to recognize the value of the natural environment and learn practical environmental actions they can take in daily life. The program also included hands-on technology experiences, with live drone demonstrations introducing how drones are used in environmental monitoring, disaster prevention and response, and engineering inspections. Students looked up with curiosity and excitement as they observed the drone operations. In addition, the courses incorporated water quality sampling and basic testing activities, allowing students to learn fundamental concepts of water resource monitoring through hands-on practice. Through learning by doing, students gained a deeper understanding of the importance of environmental protection.
Director-general Yi-shu Li of the Bureau stated that this environmental education initiative was jointly promoted by the Hydropower Construction Office (水力施工處) of Taiwan Power Company and its contractor, Kuo Yu Construction Engineering Co., Ltd., with support from a professional team in organizing the courses. During the winter vacation, the program visited schools in the Renai indigenous community, using engaging and interactive lessons to help students understand the importance of the natural environment and sustainable development. The initiative not only demonstrated the companies’ commitment to local communities and environmental education, but also helped embed environmental protection concepts within schools. The Bureau will continue encouraging construction companies across the county to participate in similar initiatives, expanding beyond construction sites into communities and schools.
