With the advance of net-zero transformation and resource circulation, various electronic products containing lithium batteries have become an indispensable part of daily life. However, improperly disposed waste dry-cell batteries can not only cause heavy metal pollution, but lithium batteries, which have high energy density, may also easily ignite when crushed, rubbed, or exposed to heat during the general waste disposal process, posing risks to frontline sanitation workers and environmental safety. Proper recycling of waste batteries is an essential part of maintaining Nantou’s green recycling system and safeguarding environmental safety.

　To ensure the proper recycling of waste dry-cell batteries and lithium batteries, the Environmental Protection Bureau, Nantou County Government reminds the public to follow the principles of “Remove, Insulate, and Sort.” First, batteries should be removed from discarded electronic appliances. Second, for high-powered lithium batteries, such as power banks and laptop batteries, residents are advised to apply insulating tape over the positive and negative terminals to prevent short circuits and fires. Finally, batteries must never be mixed with general waste. They should be collected separately and handed over to recycling trucks, convenience stores, or collection points at hypermarkets. These practical fire prevention measures can effectively reduce the risk of fires during collection and processing.

Although waste batteries are small, improper handling can result in serious fires and casualties.
