In line with the transition to net zero carbon emissions and the circular economy, the Environmental Protection Bureau (EPB) of Nantou County Government is fully promoting the “Resource Recycling and Waste Sorting Guidelines (資源回收分類指引).” Citizens are reminded that waste should be sorted into three main categories— general waste, recyclables, and food waste—and that common recyclables should be rinsed, disassembled, and properly disposed of.
- Three-Step Waste Sorting
- General Waste: Non-recyclable and non-biodegradable waste. Please collect securely, tie bags tightly, and place them in the garbage truck.
- Recyclables: Paper containers, plastic containers, aluminum cans, iron cans, glass containers, dry batteries, electronic waste, light bulbs, clean clothes, CDs/DVDs, and hazardous items (such as lighters and gas canisters). Please rinse, flatten, or remove attachments before recycling.
- Food Waste: Drain excess liquid from both raw and cooked leftovers, and remove non-food waste (such as packaging, bones, or hard fruit peels) to prevent odor and contamination.
- Key Guidelines for Common Recyclables
- Paper and Paper Containers: Sort separately and avoid oil stains; items like ice cream boxes must be rinsed and dried.
- Plastic Bottles/Containers: Rinse and flatten before recycling.
- Aluminum and Iron Cans: Empty, rinse, and flatten.
- Glass Containers: Remove contents and caps; avoid breakage.
- Dry Batteries and Light Bulbs: Store separately to prevent breakage or short-circuiting, and deliver to cleaning teams or designated recycling points.
- Styrofoam and Plastic Bag Sorting
- Styrofoam is divided into containers and packaging/cushioning materials. Remove impurities and keep items intact.
- Recyclable plastic bags include daily-use bags, shopping bags, and zipper bags. Bags with aluminum foil or metalized layers are non-recyclable and should be disposed of as general waste.
- Penalties for Violations
According to the “Waste Disposal Act,” failure to properly sort waste or the illegal disposal of waste may result in fines ranging from NT$1,200 to NT$6,000. The EPB will continue strengthening random bag checks and urges citizens not to take chances.
Director-general Yi-shu Li of the EPB stated: “Resource recycling relies on all of us. By starting in our daily lives, we can reduce waste, cut disposal costs, and leave a cleaner environment for Nantou.” The EPB urges all residents to join in reducing waste and recycling resources to build a sustainable homeland together.
