Have you already replaced your household bulbs with energy-saving LEDs and think that’s enough to save electricity? Actually, beyond choosing the right lighting, cultivating correct lighting habits is crucial for saving energy. These often-overlooked actions can not only save money but also actively help reduce global warming.
The Environmental Protection Bureau, Nantou County Government urges citizens to adopt a few simple yet effective lighting habits to save energy. First, embrace natural light by keeping curtains or blinds open during the day to let sunlight brighten indoor spaces and reduce the need for artificial lighting. Second, develop the reflex of “turning off lights immediately” when leaving a room, restroom, or office area, even if it is only for a few minutes. Third, use “zoned and task lighting,” such as a desk lamp for reading or a kitchen lamp for food preparation, instead of keeping large overhead lights on for long periods. Lastly, remember to clean light fixtures regularly, since removing dust from lampshades and bulbs significantly improves lighting efficiency and prevents unnecessary energy waste. When combined with the use of LED or other high-efficiency lighting, these habits further enhance energy savings.
EPB Director-general Yi-shu Li says, “Energy conservation is a responsibility every citizen can participate in. Small changes in lighting habits accumulate over time, saving households considerable amounts in electricity bills annually while reducing carbon emissions from power generation.” He also advises selecting LED light sources with appropriate brightness, and featuring an eco-label. During summer, reducing unnecessary lighting also lowers indoor heat, easing air-conditioning load. Start today! Make these energy-saving habits part of daily life and help build a more energy-efficient, eco-friendly, and comfortable home in Nantou.
