The Xiaohuangshan Scenic Area with towering cliffs in Zhushan Town is located on the west bank of the Qingshui River along the border of Yunlin County and Nantou County. As its magnificence and splendor resemble Huangshan in China, it is nicknamed “Xiaohuanshan” (lit. Little Huangshan).
On August 4 the Nantou County Environmental Protection Bureau co-organized the river clean-up and water quality monitoring activities with the river watch of the Zhushan Town Qingshui River Ecology Conservation Association. Through the passion of nearly 100 volunteers of the river waste, a total of 165 kg of river debris, including the waste and deadwood from typhoon Gaemi, were cleaned up under strong sunlight to regain the original beauty of the scenic area and improve local water quality. Education on water quality monitoring was also arranged on that day for volunteers to control the quality of water bodies with easy water quality test kits and handheld water quality detectors.
Biodiversity is found in the marsh of Xiaohuangshan Scenic Area. It is home to species including dragonflies, birds, and butterflies. Through long-time adoption of the scenic area, the Zhushan Town Qingshui River Ecology Conservation Association has greened and beautified the high riverbank and built the riverside flood control ecological pond to demonstrate the dual effect of flood control and environmental beautification and protect the habitats of native species against damage. The association also organizes river clean-up and water quality monitoring activities regularly to preserve the beauty of Xiaohuangshan in order to progressively make “clean the water for fish to swim and maintain the river for sustainability” a reality.
Thanks to Deputy Chief Yan-Jing Lin of the Office of Legislator Hao Yu, Nantou County Councilor Meng-E Cai, Township Representative Guo-Yin Zeng, Zhushan Town Head Dong-Mu Chen for their participation, their support for the water environment watch, and their selfless devotion to the routine river protection.
