Under the trees in parks, in the streets and on the roads, around bus stops and near gutters, cigarette butts are seen everywhere over time. According to the Nantou County Environmental Protection Bureau, apart from spoiling the city image and cleanliness, cigarette butts contain lots of toxic substances that can severely contaminate the environment and affect the food chain to harm the environment and ecosystems, and even threaten human health.

To make improvements, the Nantou County Environmental Protection Bureau actively supports the “No Cigarette Butt Littering for a More Beautiful Environment” campaign promoted by the MOENV to “reduce cigarette butts and clean the environment” through six major strategies and the 21+N measures. It also advises smokers to develop the following habits: extinguishing cigarettes properly, not smoking while walking, smoking in places with ashtrays and bins, bringing personal cigarette butt collectors as one goes, putting cigarette butts in the bin, and no littering cigarette butts.

Currently there are 283 eco-friendly shops in Nantou County supporting “No Cigarette Butt Littering.” Apart from seriously maintaining the environment of their shops, owners also voluntarily clean up the surroundings to effectively reduce chaos caused by cigarette butt littering to turn Nantou into a livable and beautiful place.

The Nantou County Environmental Protection Bureau emphasizes, in accordance with the Waste Disposal Act, the maximum fine for cigarette butt littering is NT$6,000. The Nantou County Environmental Protection Bureau will continue to clamp down on and report illegal acts and enhance outreach to shop-owners to keep storefront overhangs and pavements clean in accordance with Article 11, paragraph 2, Waste Disposal Act. It further calls for more shop-owners to join the eco-friendly shop adoption movement.

According to Director-General Yi-Shu Li of the Nantou County Environmental Protection Bureau, as environmental protection is everyone’s responsibility, he hopes that all citizens can work together to contribute to the ecosystems, environment, and public health of Nantou. By developing the above habits, smokers can save money from being fined for cigarette butt littering and safeguard the beautiful environment of Nantou, turning the county into a more beautiful and more livable clean city.
