Waste disposal is difficult in Nantou. The waste reduction policy is thus the top priority to optimize waste reduction at the source and reduce waste generation. The excessive package restriction policy was implemented in 2005 to limit the number of layers of packages for cakes, cosmetics, alcohol, food processing, and computer software DVD. The Nantou County Environmental Protection Bureau also enhanced supermarket inspections before the Dragon Boat Festival to cooperate with this policy to ensure no excessive packages of boxed gifts to prevent the waste of resources.
Additionally, box packages have become increasingly elaborate and complex in recent years following the advancement in packaging technology. The Nantou County Environmental Protection Bureau advocates citizens to prevent buying products with excessive packages based on the eco-friendly packaging principle, featuring “more the product content, less packages, less material types, and less printing,” when shopping for gifts. Apart from saving natural resources, this can also save trouble in waste disposal.
According to Yi-Shu Li, Director-General of the Nantou County Environmental Protection Bureau, “We must be aware that excessive packaging is a waste of resources and causes serious environmental damage. This policy is an inevitable action to protect our homeland and ensure a healthy environment for our offspring.” He also urges gift suppliers, particularly suppliers of dumplings and other festive gifts, to reduce unnecessary packaging and select recyclable or biodegradable packaging materials during the Dragon Boat Festival. He further advises consumers to select products with simple packages and use reusable shopping bags so as to contribute to waste reduction at the source for Nantou together.
