Are you bothered by waste odors or having to go after the garbage truck every day? The Environmental Protection Bureau, Nantou County has offered a subsidy for household food waste decomposers to help households solve waste odors. Subsidies up to NT$10,000 per household will be granted to those with household registration in Nantou County. To be eligible, residents must enclose the application form, receipt, Household Certificate, manual, account number, photographs of use, and other information for review, in order to obtain approval. The subsidy quota is limited on a first come, first served basis.

According to the Environmental Protection Bureau, Nantou County, the waste sampling results show that food waste accounts for 20%-30%. In order to effectively cultivate the general public’s habit with respect to food waste reduction so that it is not required for them to rely on garbage truck every day and to minimize odor in trash cans, the food waste decomposer subsidy scheme has been put forward. For purchasing food waste decomposers before November 30, 2022, a subsidy can be applied by attaching related application information and mailing it to the Environmental Protection Bureau. Subsidies are granted after review and subject to approval. The Environmental Protection Bureau hopes to achieve food waste recycling and reuse and reduce mosquito breeding problems through this subsidy scheme.

Nantou County Magistrate Lin Ming-Chen emphasized that the daily waste in Nantou County is about 250 tons. Since there are no garbage incineration facilities within the jurisdiction, its waste disposal relies on other counties and cities. Due to the progressive reorganization of incineration plants in other countries and cities in recent years, waste removal in Nantou County has become more difficult. This year, a budget of NT$20 million has been allocated for a trial run of the public’s purchase of food decomposers to process food waste. Subsidies up to NT$10,000 may be granted to each household. The general public’s purchase of food decomposers will be gradually promoted. The carbonado produced from the food decomposer can effectively reduce the volume of food waste by more than 80%. It can also be used for potted plants, thereby substantially reducing the amount of waste.

Considering the difficulty of waste removal in the county, Environmental Protection Bureau director Li Yi-Shu launches an appeal to sort waste into three categories: food waste, recycling, and trash reduction. Meanwhile, reduction at the source is the ultimate goal. Cook how much you can consume to save food and protect the environment. The bureau hopes that households will apply for a home food decomposer to promote recycling and reuse at home, jointly contribute to household waste output, and nourish our land, thereby working toward waste reduction and recycling in concerted efforts!
