In cooperation with the central policy, the Environmental Protection Bureau, Nantou County, has since September 1st, 2007 commenced the full implementation of the reuse of waste edible oil produced by households, schools, agencies, fast food chains, and other businesses into renewable energy (biodiesel). In cooperation with the policy, beginning January 1st, 2015, the implementation of service providers deliver waste edible oil to a legal clearance agency with a waste edible oil work permit has been strengthened. This way, resources can be recycled and reused through proper channels.

Oil left from sauteed, stir-fried, and deep-fried foods will lose its stability after cooking. Therefore, repeatedly heating of oil is not recommended. Based on this, oil should be handed to a cleaning squadron within the jurisdiction for recycling. The types of recyclable waste edible oils include: animal oil after cooking (beef tallow, lard, etc.) and plant oil (sunflower oil, olive oil, etc.), or expired edible oil. Non-edible oils, lubricants are not included in the category as their properties differ from those of edible oils. These oils, however, can be recycled via other channels. The general public must separate non-edible oils and lubricants from waste edible oil for recycling.

According to the Environmental Protection Bureau, many people are unaware of how to handle edible oil after cooking and is often mixed with food waste for recycling. This will affect the quality of food waste for recycling and reuse. The Environmental Protection Bureau reminds the general public to first cool down waste edible oil, place it in a clean container, and seal it tightly before giving it to a cleaning squadron within the jurisdiction for recycling. They further urge the public to not dump waste edible oil into drainage, as it may cause obstruction and odor, resulting in environmental health issues.

To accommodate the waste edible oil recycling and removal needs of major food service providers in the county, catering businesses may contact a legal removal agency to dispose of oils. Search the Environmental Protection Bureau, Nantou County Government for the list of relevant businesses. Contact a removal agency for disposing of oil matters. Food service providers (restaurants, eateries, street vendors) that fail to deliver waste edible oil to an agency with a permit and work permit shall be issued a fine of NT$1200~NT$6,000  in accordance with Article 12 of the Waste Disposal Act.
