To reduce environmental burdens and enhance resource recycling efficiency, the Ministry of Environment banned single-use tableware on specific targets, hoping to reduce plastic waste at the source, enhance the overall efficiency of environmental protection, and encourage businesses to adopt eco-friendlier alternatives so as to contribute to environmental protection.
According to the Resource Circulation Administration (RECA), Ministry of Environment (MOENV), the supply of single-use tableware was banned in July 2002 on the following eight target groups: government agencies, private schools, department stores and shopping malls, hypermarkets, supermarkets, convenience store chains, fast food chains, and restaurants. In 2023 MOENV further expanded the ban to the supply of PLA disposable tableware, including cups, bowls, plates, meal boxes, and plastic containers inside meal boxes. There are about 739 control targets in Nantou County. The Nantou County Environmental Protection Bureau will continue the inspection and guidance for them. If they are targets within any one of the above eight groups, a complete ban on the use of plastic disposable tableware will be imposed for dining in service. For government agencies, private schools, department stores, shopping malls, and hypermarkets, the use of all kinds of disposable tableware will be banned. Offenders will be sanctioned in accordance with Article 51, paragraph 3, the Waste Disposal Act, with a fine of NT$1,200–NT$6,000. Please do not challenge the law.
Director-General Yi-Shu Li of the Nantou County Environmental Protection Bureau advocates, as waste disposal is difficult in Nantou County, reduction at the source is the prime mission. He urges related business owners to cooperate with the government to ban all kinds of disposable tableware for dining-in service to prevent sanctions from harming their rights and interests. He also encourages the public to proactively cooperate with the reduction at the source and prepare their own tableware when dining out to support the government’s environmental protection policy for a better Nantou County.
